What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough quite simply is an upper respiratory infection in dogs much like a cold for humans, which is a self-limited disease.  Rarely is kennel cough fatal and the ones that would be at risk would be young puppies, senior dogs or any dog that has a compromised immune system.  Classic signs for kennel cough are a forceful, persistent cough that is “honking” in nature, they may have sneezing, discharge from their eyes and nose.  Kennel cough is highly contagious, if you think your dog may have kennel cough, you should keep him away from other animals and contact your veterinarian.  Although most cases of kennel cough will resolve without treatment, medications may speed recovery or minimize symptoms during the course of infection. These include antibiotics that target Bordetella bacteria and cough medicines.   Veterinarians may choose to put puppies, senior dogs, or a dog that are immuno-compromised on antibiotics just to cover them so it doesn’t escalate to pneumonia.  However, a healthy dog will be able to recover from this on his or her own which can take up to 3 weeks, though it can take up to six weeks in older dogs or those with other medical conditions.  If your dog does have kennel cough rarely will it result in loss of appetite or decrease in energy.  You may also find that keeping your dog in a well-humidified area and using a harness instead of a collar, especially for dogs that strain against a leash, will minimize the coughing.

Where can dogs get kennel cough?  Is it just from a kennel facility?  NO

Although the name “kennel cough” makes one assume the virus is contracted mainly through kennel environments, your dog can actually contract kennel cough anywhere there are dogs.  Exposure at dog parks, pet stores, dog shows, daycare, veterinary hospitals, boarding kennels, literally anywhere.  Much like how people are exposed to colds and viruses when going out in public.

Does the vaccine work?

The kennel cough vaccine only covers a few strains of the disease and given there are multiple strains the vaccine efficacy is less than 60%. The vaccine is given 2 different ways;

  1. Intranasal:A modified live virus of the vaccine is squirted into your dog’s nose.  You may notice a few days after they receive this vaccine your dog may have a few episodes of coughing, this is because they have a transient form of kennel cough.
  2. Injectable: This is given just like the distemper and rabies vaccines, though they may not exhibit any coughing with this vaccine but they will still be shedding it.

Is Kennel Cough a required vaccine?  NO

You are not required to get a kennel cough vaccine as it is not part of the “core” vaccines, some boarding, training and grooming facilities will require it.  It is always best to check with the boarding facility prior to boarding your pet to see what their requirements are.

Does Bark-N-Bubbles require Kennel Cough vaccine?  NO

Our policy does NOT require the kennel cough vaccine, however if YOU choose to do this vaccine your dog can not be boarded or come to daycare for 14 DAYS due to your pet shedding the virus during this time.  If you board and its less than 14 days from their vaccine there will be an additional charge as we will need to keep your pet separated so they do not transmit it to the other dogs in our care.

**We are by no means veterinary professionals and as always it’s best to consult with your vet to see what best suits the needs of your dog.**

Indoor Kenneling
Consists of two options: Our facility consists of not only the Main Building, but Kennels One and Two are set on two picturesque acres with loads of space for your dog to play, socialize and get the exercise he or she needs. All of the buildings at Bark-N-Bubblessm are climate controlled offering both heat and air conditioning.

Kennel One, offers your dog an individual space with clean, off the floor bedding and lots of room to move around. There your dog will be able to rest, eat and have plenty of fresh drinking water. Dogs who stay with us in Kennel One are guided out to one of our five separate outdoor areas for exercise, socialization and playtime throughout the day.

Kennel Two, offers the same accommodations for your dog as Kennel One but also has individual outdoor, weather sheltered runs that provide your dog with the freedom to have outdoor play and exercise he or she needs whenever they want, without having to interact with other dogs. This style of kennel is especially beneficial for special needs, intact or dogs who prefer not to socialize.

Outside Play Area
Unlike some kennels, we have 5 separate areas for your dog to play. This enables us to match up dogs by their size, exercise needs and personalities.

Have a dog who doesn’t like to play with other dogs? No problem! We have individual runs at no additional charge so your dog can still enjoy the outdoors without having to socialize.

Includes all day play, water play time, and any special needs (including most medications, special diets, or other special requirements).

Boarding Pickup Times
Animals that are picked up from boarding BEFORE 11:00am, will not be charged that day for boarding. Animals that are picked up from boarding AFTER 11:00am will be charged a full day of boarding for that day. It is best to bring your dog’s own food that you have been feeding them. Please put each meal in labeled individual baggies, if meals are not individually bagged Bark-N-Bubbles will charge a fee of $35 per stay/per dog. We can provide Diamond Beef Meal and Rice Formula dry dog food to our boarders. It is however, not recommended that you change your dog’s diet as doing so may result in upset stomach and diarrhea during their stay and once at home when you switch back to their regular diet

Cat Boarding
We also have boarding for cats. For only $28.00 per calendar day, your cat can relax in his or her own comfortable, dog free space.

We supply dry and wet food for your cat unless you would prefer to bring his/her own food which is perfectly fine. Please make sure the food is in portioned out, labeled baggies. Please note, all cats must be up to date on their Rabies and Distemper vaccinations in order to stay with us.
